Botox & Dysport

Neuromodulators such as Botox and Dysport are wrinkle-relaxing injections of botulinum toxin that are used to treat wrinkles, frown lines, and crow’s feet. A small amount of the neuromodulator is injected directly into the underlying muscle, causing it to relax and gradually smooth out the appearance of the overlying skin. The effects typically last about four months.

Vertical lines between the brows caused by the frequent tightening of muscles, leading to an aged or overly severe appearance. Every time we laugh, frown, concentrate or narrow our eyes in the sun, muscle contraction causes the skin to crease. As skin ages and elasticity decreases, these creases can become deeper, lingering even when the face is more relaxed.

Botox and Dysport FAQ

  • Neuromodulators reduce muscle contraction in the treated area by blocking the signal that is sent by the nerves to the muscle. By temporarily relaxing the contraction of the muscle, Botox and Dysport smooth the frown lines. The treatment takes about 10 to 20 minutes to complete.

  • You will see your results gradually over 3-7 days following injection. It cannot be determined if additional Botox or Dysport units may be needed for the desired results until at least 10 days after the initial procedure.

We take a conservative approach for first-time patients with the amount of Botox or Dysport used. It is easy to “touch-up” areas after 10 days.

  • The results of Botox & Dysport typically last between 3-5 months from the date of injection. Over time the body metabolizes the neuromodulator, leading to the slow return of muscle movement in the treatment area. Patients can choose to maintain their results for longer periods by undergoing periodic maintenance treatments every 3-4 months.

  • The effects are long lasting but not permanent. They last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years, depending on a number of factors including the patient’s age, area treated, type of filler used, quantity of filler used, and lifestyle.

  • A week before the treatment most physicians will advise patients to stop consuming alcohol or taking medications or supplements that thin the blood like aspirin, ibuprofen, Gingko Biloba, or Ginseng. This will help minimize bruising after the procedure.

  • Side effects from a Botox treatment may include bruising, swelling, redness, or tenderness around the injection site, all of which will typically resolve without intervention after a few days to a week.
